QUEZON CITY — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) has announced the launch of Year 5 of the Gawad Taga-Ilog: Search for the Most Improved Estero in Metro Manila.
The program continues its mission to recognize local government units, particularly barangays for their outstanding efforts in rehabilitating Metro Manila’s esteros and promoting community cleanliness.
This year’s program dubbed “GTI 5.0”, is geared at reaffirming the DENR’s commitment to restoring and neutralizing the esteros and waterways through community action and collaboration, in line with this year’s key message “Together, We Transform Our Estero, Waterways: Nurturing Community Efforts for a Cleaner, Greener Manila Bay!”
Highlighting the power of local participation and engagement in environmental stewardship, showcasing successful transformations that not only enhance the ecological health of waterways but also strengthen community ties.
The press conference held on Nov. 12, 2024 underscored the goals and objectives for this year’s competition, stressing the significance of community action in addressing the challenges faced by esteros throughout the NCR.
With a focus on sustainable practices and robust community engagement, the GTI seeks to empower the collective efforts of government units and communities.
“Through this program, we want to show that sustainable solutions don’t just come from the top, they happen when residents and local leaders work together to achieve common goals,” DENR-NCR Regional Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias said.
“The active support of residents in keeping their esteros clean is a key driver for the success of the Gawad Taga-Ilog program, and we hope to see even more participation this year,” Matias added.
