QUEZON CITY — Mayor Joy Belmonte on Tuesday (July 22) expressed the hope that local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila work together to mitigate flooding as they share riverways and tributaries.
In an interview aired over DZMM, Mayor Belmonte said that Quezon City has been implementing plans and projects for sustainable development and climate resiliency.
Belmonte added that the Quezon City Government has prohibited the single plastic use, which she hopes would also be replicated by other LGUs in the metropolis.
It will be noted that the accumulation of plastic wastes and garbage in the drainage and canals has been blamed for the perennial flooding in the metropolis.
In her third and last term, Mayor Belmonte
also cited that the construction of some national government infrastructures might have contributed to the heavy floodings in some areas in Quezon City due probably to disregard to natural terrain of waterways.
Among the areas heavily affected by floodings are Commonwealth Avenue where the MRT Line 7 is being constructed and the Araneta Avenue where the Skyway Stage 3 has been constructed.
Belmonte said that engineering companies should take into consideration the natural terrain of waterways even before undertaking their respective projects.
She added that Quezon City cannot do it alone, stressing that there should be a whole of metropolis approach in order to address the perennial flooding through sustainable development with nature resiliency and climate adaptation. ###
