When Filipino athletes step onto the global stage or compete in national tournaments, their victories often reflect not just their hard work but the robust support of their communities that fuels their journey.
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, as chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, has consistently prioritized providing vital assistance for national and international sports events, helping to strengthen the Philippines’ reputation as a nation of exceptional athletes.
Senator Go’s advocacy has enabled the participation and success of Filipino athletes in various high-profile events. Among the programs supported under his leadership are the initiatives of the Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas, grassroots competitions like the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Games, and the National Masters and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines.
These efforts ensure that Filipino athletes, whether seasoned professionals or young talents have the resources they need to excel.
On the international front, Senator Go has also backed events like the Asia Rugby 7s Series, represented by the Philippine Rugby Football Union, led by Ada Milby. Such events allow Filipino athletes to showcase their skills on a global scale, fostering national pride, and inspiring the next generation of sports enthusiasts.
“Naniniwala ako na ang tagumpay sa sports ay tagumpay ng bawat Pilipino. Kaya patuloy nating susuportahan ang ating mga atleta sa abot ng ating makakaya,” Senator Go said, underscoring his commitment to fostering Filipino talent.
In addition to financial support for national and international competitions in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission, Senator Go has been pivotal in securing the development of key infrastructures.
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila and Philsports Arena in Pasig City now stand revitalized, providing modern facilities where athletes can train and excel. These improvements underscore Senator Go’s belief in creating spaces where sports not only thrive but inspire.
Senator Go’s vision for Philippine sports was also realized through his authorship and co-sponsorship of Republic Act No. 11470, establishing the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac. NAS, a state-of-the-art facility that integrates secondary education with a specialized sports curriculum, embodies a dual-path approach for student-athletes. Here, budding athletes can pursue excellence in their respective sports while achieving academic success.
“Ang mga kabataan ang kinabukasan ng ating bansa. As I always remind our youth, get into sports, stay away from illegal drugs to keep us healthy and fit,” Senator Go shared. His emphasis on youth development is evident in the programs he champions, providing avenues for young talents to flourish and grow, whether in local leagues or international arenas.
As the Philippines charts its future in sports, Senator Go continues to be at the helm, ensuring that every Filipino athlete has the support and resources they need to achieve greatness.
In his words, “Ang tagumpay ng bawat atleta ay tagumpay nating lahat. Sama-sama tayong magsikap para sa ating bansa.”
It is this collective spirit that makes Senator Go’s efforts a cornerstone of the nation’s sporting triumphs, providing not just opportunities but also hope for generations to come.
Go has also continuously pushed for an increased budget for sports programs to significantly improve Filipino athletes’ preparation, training, and competitive performance on the international stage while launching effective programs to cultivate the talents of young and aspiring sports enthusiasts at the grassroots level.
As Chairperson of the Senate Youth Committee, Go continues to urge government to prioritize sports engagement among citizens, not only for elite athletes but also for aspiring youth athletes, especially at the grassroots.
